Best Social Networking Apps – 2012

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE READING THE APP LIST.

Face it, You can’t survive without Facebook. And there is no better alternative to it in Social Networking. Agreed Google + is there. But really? And even if there is, be assured it would be pounced by these two giants. Eg, Instagram. It became hugely popular and Facebook took it.

Off late, due to heavy boredom and hatred towards Facebook, I began looking out for Facebook alternatives. Believe me, I found none! So I decided to see if there are any other Social Networking apps that might impress me. And I shortlisted to the list below. The list below are not exactly alternatives to Facebook. These are other Social Networking apps that might impress you.

1) Twitter – Its mighty famous when compared to any of the other ‘choices’ listed below. If you are not on twitter, open an account and start tweeting, you will begin to love it. Its not complicated. Its simple, easy, clean and tremendously useful. Yes! Useful. With new Stock Tags or Ticker Tags, It is perhaps useful. There are people who believe Twitter is way better than Fb (I am one among those!). And few twitter habits has crept into Facebook for some unexplainable reason like use of #hashtags! I don’t know what they mean on Facebook but those are immensely useful in Tweet world. This is the next best thing to Facebook!

Android – YES

2) Instagram – The app that makes everyone to think they are awesome photographers! Acquired by Facebook did lead to few hatred, it still is the best for photo sharing. The best feature of this app is that it will make u look like a ‘pro’ in photography! You can add filters and make it look vintage, 1940’s or like however you want. Initially it was for Apple-boys app and with recent launch in Android, its got a huge fan base. You are sure to have atleast 30% of your fb friends on this.

3) Foursquare – The checkin app which is Immensely popular. Check in to wherever you go and let your friends on Facebook and Twitter know it. Give recommendations of the place you went and also tips and Add photos. To make it more fun, you can unlock achievements and badges. There are like 250 odd badges they say. So you won’t get bored. Overall, a fun way to keep your friends updated on where you are and your tips if they are going there next.

Android – YES

4) Pinterest – A photo sharing app in pinboard like style. Though a photo sharing app, its not a instagram like appa. Here you can browse for ‘pins’ based on the category and your likes. You can ‘re-pin’ them again to share with your friends.  Again, it was initially for iPhone/iPod Touch only. hence it had very limited users. With recent release of both iPad and Android versions, you are sure to have many more people to sign in. Its been written that ComScore showed pinterest is 3rd most visited social networking app. I would recommend this app! But if you are looking for instagram style where you can add filters, this isn’t the one for you.

Android – YES

5) Via.Me – A mixture of Pinterest, tumblr and instagram. You can share photos, video or sound with your friends. I feel this is more like a blogging platform like a tumblr than anything else. You can again like, repost and you can also see number of people who have viewed your pic. So stat on the go is nice feature. Also while adding, you get this instagram like filters. So you can edit your pic/video/sound and post it on the move without much of hassle. Right now its not available in Android so again the users are very limited.

iOS – YES

Android – NO

6) Tiny Post – Tiny Review got changed to Tiny Post – Say it on a Picture. The caption says it all. Take a pic and add a line or two about it on the picture itself, post and share with most of the platforms. This is so simple compared to many other photo sharing apps and website. This has tags more like twitter, but with a difference, for you to tag your pictures. Also tag your friends (if they are on tiny post only!). Again only available on iOS and I do see this coming to android soon.

Android – NO

7) Fancy – Window shopping app at its best! The app that Tim Cook, as they say, was trying to buy. It has a photo stream of things or stuff. You can add to cart and buy on the go! Just like how you buy app on iTunes was one of the reason Tim might have been interested. It has so much of stuff that you would really want to buy  atleast one of it. Its got hotels rooms, places to visit and things like that. Many famous brands show their catalogs in the way they always dreamt of. Even though you are not going to end up buying, just use this app. Its worth the install. Available on both iOS and Android platforms.

8) Pearltrees – Want to share articles that you love with others? Then this app is for you. IF you have friends you can add them and share blogs that you find are interesting. You build your own ‘pearl tree’ and if someone likes your ‘pearl’ they can pick your branch and they can share. By this way you can create a whole network. It really works the best if you have friends who keep sharing what they like on this.  It more becomes like a reading list for you. To make things so much easier, there are extensions for browser too! So just pearl it on the go!

Android – YES

9) Path – A beautiful app. More of a silent Facebook app. Doesn’t have those thunderous features of Facebook, but it so so sexy! The UI is awesome to be frank. More like timeline on Facebook. You can share photos, check in , music, thoughts and awake/sleep. The last one is more unique. Lets you update if your awake or sleep. But there is a difference. Not all can see this. Only those who follow your ‘path’ gets to see it. The app is so so nice and elegant that I love to just see this. I wish I had friends on this app to start using. Also you can share you’re updates on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Tumblr. A big fan of this app!!

Android – YES

10) Cooliris – A photo feed app to me more precise. You can call this a social networking app because you can create ‘conversations’ about a pic. More like comments. But again the UI is in 3D and is very very neat! All you can do is link up your Facebook and Instagram ID’s and you can view them on this app in a cool way. On your Facebook tile you can view based on your Timeline, Your feed, Post you were tagged in etc. Just a cool way to look at your photos.

iOS – YES

Android – Preinstalled in Nexus One. Not sure about other phones.

11) Flipboard – Flipboard: Your social News magazine. And It does exactly that. Links all your social networking sites and presents itself in a beautiful magazine. You can also add your interests to that! Link accounts like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Google + (Haha!), Google Reader (Awesome! But also bombs your magazine most of times!) , LinkedIn (Oh! The app I am forgetting to write here coz I just don’t like it!), flickr, 500px, Sina Weibo, Renren, Sound Cloud, You Tube and New York Times. It combines all these feeds into a magazine. An obvious fault is you can’t look up at it when offline. If it has this feature, its sure got more admirers that they would have imagined.

iOS – YES

Android – YES

12) Gogobot – App similar to Tripadvisor but not exactly the same. You can plan your travel both alone and with your friends. Share you pictures of your trip and let your friends know where you stayed, when you ventured out and push it on your Facebook or twitter. The beautiful part is to create a postcard of your trip. More like badges on FourSquare, earn points! You profile is your ‘Passport’ and you get promoted based on your trips, reviews etc. If you travel much, Please share your experience on this app. highly recommended!

iOS – YES

Android – NOT YET

13) Cupidtino – The first and only Apple based Dating site! If you have any iDevice, you can register. There is a paid version too if you want to message. But I hardly doubt if there is much interest. It gained interest initially, but frankly, lost it in the process. I do have a profile. So you can always search for me over there :P

iOS – YES

Android – NO

14) Vyclone – The best video sharing app. Don’t confuse this for SocialCam. This does something more – Multiple Camera Capture. If you are on concert with 3 friends. If you all have this app, you can shoot videos from different angles and edit them and obviously, share them!!! Seriously, the most powerful video editor for iOS! The problem is that, it automatically does the sorting of videos and editing. So you don’t do the editing but, they say, it does the best. I haven’t tried this app myself, but hoping to do so very soon.

iOS – YES

Android – NO

15) Social Cam – A famous Video sharing app but more of Instagram style than Vyclone. On-the-go add filters to your videos, shoot and share. Very simple app, has got many followers unlike most of the above apps which is huge positive. A Video Instagram and won’t be surprised if Google buys out this app for Youtube.

iOS – YES

Android – YES

16) Tripl – An app that I stumbled upon very recently and perhaps a very cool travel app. Link your Facebook, Foursquare, Instagram account and It will automatically let you know the vacations taken by your friends. And it works magically. I have linked all my accounts and it shows on the timeline all travels made by my friends with pictures. I can comment on it, like it and also bookmark the destination.
